With lockdown restrictions still in place and Covid-19 still a nationwide issue, oral hygiene is more important than ever. It might be difficult for you to visit your dentist at this time, so the last thing you need to worry about is an issue with your teeth.

The Oral Health Foundation has set out some key points to help you maintain the best oral hygiene during these uncertain times and help minimise the spread of Covid-19 in the process.

1. Never Share Your Toothbrush

You probably don’t routinely share a toothbrush with someone, but it’s important to never even borrow someone else’s toothbrush. Viruses can remain active on toothbrush heads and be easily transmitted.

For this same reason, make sure toothbrush heads are kept separate when being stored.

2. Close the Toilet Lid

Your toothbrush should be stored inside a cabinet or drawer to keep it as germ-free as possible. However, if this isn’t an option and your toothbrush lives on a shelf in your bathroom, it’s at risk of faecal particles and germs landing on it when the toilet is flushed.

Research has shown that Covid-19 can be transferred through faecal matter, so whenever you flush the loo, make sure you close the lid to stop the spray of particles.

3. Switch Out Your Toothbrush Regularly

Whether you use an electric toothbrush or manual, you should switch it out every three months. Or as soon as the bristles become frayed if this is sooner.

A worn-down brush doesn’t clean the teeth effectively. What’s more, bacteria can build up on a toothbrush, so switching it out regularly can minimise the spread of bacteria.

If you are diagnosed with Covid-19, you should change your toothbrush as soon as you are well again to ensure the virus isn’t lingering.

4. Keep Up the Basics

Lockdown fatigue is a growing issue in the UK and people are suffering more than ever with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Because of this, it can become easy to neglect your oral hygiene.

But it’s important to keep up with the basics. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly, and drink plenty of water to keep your mouth and teeth healthy.

Interdental brushes are also important for cleaning between your teeth and you can consider using mouthwash to keep mouth bacteria at bay.

5. Visiting Your Dentist

Although check-ups and cleanings may be delayed due to local lockdown restrictions, you should visit your dentist as regularly as possible. This will help ensure your teeth are clean and healthy through these uncertain times.

If you have an emergency, make sure to ring your dentist to get their advice. Any issue left for too long may become more serious and difficult to treat.
