Dental implants are permanent fixtures placed within the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Dental implants look natural when placed into your mouth and provide the foundation for replacement teeth, which can be made of ceramic or porcelain.
If you’re considering getting implants, you may have asked the question, do dental implants hurt? The answer is no! There is, however, discomfort during and after the procedure, but this is normal.
At Oldbury Smile Spa, we understand how important it is to feel comfortable during a procedure, that’s why we take great care of our patients and help them every step of the way.
Read on to learn more about how your dental implants will be placed and why this treatment can be the right solution for you.
Before The Implant Procedure
Your dentist may give you medication for the pain prior to the surgery. This will make it easier for you once the anaesthesia has worn off, giving you the needed pain relief to last through. Naturally, there will be some post-operative discomfort. However, don’t worry, your dentist will guide you through it.
More often than not, a tailored aftercare plan is given to ensure that your individual needs have been taken care of. With this in mind, your recovery will likely be as pain-free as possible.
Dental Implant Procedure
Here is an overview of the dental implant procedure at Oldbury Smile Spa:
After we’ve been to see an orthodontist or a dental specialist to confirm that you are healthy enough for an implant, we’ll work together to plan your treatment schedule. With all of your teeth intact, we will perform extraction on any that may be a detriment to your treatment and then we will formulate a plan of action.
It’s a fairly small surgery and only a local anaesthetic is required. This means that the treatment will not hurt as you will be sedated. Placing dental implants won’t be a problem as long as they’re not being inserted all at once and put undue pressure on the surrounding tissue.
The first stage is drilling into the jaw bone, where we then insert the titanium root. After the root has integrated and has time to heal, the connecting post and crown will be fitted onto it. With the implant roots, it is likely to take from 6 weeks to 6 months to fully fuse with your bone, your implant dentist will keep an eye on how well your implants are healing and coordinate your procedures accordingly.
Dental Implant Aftercare And Healing
Recovery time can range from a few days to months depending on the individual and how many implants will be fitted, but the majority of patients recover from surgery within a month.
You are expected to feel minor discomfort for the first two weeks, but pain persisting beyond that point may be indicative of an infection. You should make a follow-up appointment with your dentist if this happens.
Given that this is a very rare outcome, it’s worth pointing out some ways to avoid infection, which your dentist may already know: keep up with advice from your dentist, stay smoke-free, and make sure you take care of your teeth following their advice.
Dental Anxiety With Getting Implants
We specialise in helping patients deal with anxiety and fear of dental treatment. Patients are most at ease when they feel they are in control of their situation. For this reason, we carefully explain the entire procedure before it is completed.
Many of our patients have found this approach very useful and have helped them deal with the prospect of pain.
Are Dental Implants Right For You?
For dental implants to be an option for you, you will need to have healthy bones in your jaw and enough gum to keep your teeth in place. Because you have experienced tooth loss, are experiencing gum inflammation, or experience other oral health problems, dental implants may not be a good choice for you.
