Conditions We Treat
Dental Emergencies We Treat
A severe toothache can be caused by several problems, including tooth decay, infection, a cracked tooth or inflammation inside the tooth. You should seek dental advice if the pain is persistent, worsening, disturbing your sleep or making it difficult to eat normally. Rather than simply masking the pain, our dentist will examine the tooth and identify what is causing it so that the appropriate treatment can be recommended. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include a filling, root canal treatment, repair of the tooth or extraction where the tooth cannot be saved.
A dental abscess is an infection that can develop around a tooth or within the gum. Symptoms may include intense tooth or gum pain, swelling around the tooth, facial or jaw swelling, a bad taste in the mouth, sensitivity to hot or cold, difficulty chewing, and fever or feeling generally unwell. A dental abscess requires urgent dental assessment and will not normally resolve by itself. Our emergency dentist can assess the infection and discuss the treatment required to address its underlying cause. If swelling is affecting your ability to breathe, swallow or speak, seek emergency medical attention rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
A tooth can break because of an accident, biting something hard, an old filling failing or because the underlying tooth has become weakened. Even when a broken tooth is not initially painful, the inside of the tooth may become exposed and more vulnerable to further damage. If you have broken or fractured a tooth, contact us as soon as possible. Depending on the damage, treatment could involve repairing the tooth with a filling or restoration, protecting it with a crown, root canal treatment or extraction if it cannot be restored.
A knocked-out adult tooth is particularly time-sensitive. If possible, pick the tooth up by the white crown (not the root), gently rinse it in milk, saline or saliva if dirty, and gently reposition it in its socket if it goes back easily. If you cannot replace it, keep it in milk or saliva and contact a dentist immediately. Do not attempt to put a knocked-out baby tooth back into the socket. Current NHS guidance recommends seeking emergency dental care as soon as possible following a knocked-out adult tooth. Call us immediately on 0121 552 7749.
Losing a filling or crown can leave part of the tooth exposed, causing sensitivity or pain and increasing the risk of further damage. Avoid chewing hard foods on the affected tooth and arrange a dental assessment. Our dentist can examine the tooth and determine whether the restoration can be replaced, repaired or whether another form of treatment is needed.
Pain around a wisdom tooth can occur when the tooth is partially erupted or there is inflammation or infection around the surrounding gum. Symptoms can include pain towards the back of the mouth, swollen or tender gums, difficulty chewing, an unpleasant taste and difficulty opening your mouth. If wisdom tooth pain is severe, persistent or accompanied by swelling, arrange an emergency assessment so that the cause can be identified.

While You Wait
What Can I Do While Waiting?
Depending on the problem, you may be able to reduce discomfort temporarily while waiting to see a dentist.
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Eat softer foods
- Avoid chewing on the painful side
- Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods if they trigger pain
- Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water if appropriate
Pain relief helps manage symptoms temporarily, but does not treat the underlying cause. Current NHS guidance recommends seeing a dentist when toothache persists or is accompanied by swelling, fever or pain when biting.

After not being able to get into a dentist for years. Harry managed to get me booked in for an overall check up and a deep clean. I then later returned to start my teeth whitening which I am so impressed with. I can not fault Harry and his team enough. Everyone is so warm and welcoming. I will never use another dentist again😁Posted on Google![]()

I would definitely recommend this dentist. Harry and his staff are lovely and accommodating. Nothing is ever too much trouble. I wanted my teeth straightened and took the decision to ask for braces to be fitted. Being an 'older' person I wanted to spend my hard earned money on myself for a change to make me feel better. My bottom teeth had moved and were crossing over and rather than eventually having to have false teeth I opted for the braces. The treatment lasted 12 months but the outcome was really good. My teeth are lovely and straight now and I'm no longer embarrassed to smile. I'm not saying it was easy but Harry is an excellent dentist who knows his stuff. I always felt he would do a great job and he certainly did. Thank you to all the team - keep up the good work.Posted on Google![]()
